You have a dog and you bought a dog pen for him to have alone time and play, but have you ever thought that having a dog pen came with a responsibility for cleanliness? What I am trying to say here is that, dog pens needs to be cleaned. Dog pen cannot wash itself alone, of course you have to clean it. Maybe there are times you thought that a strong strain and wash away your dos’s poo-poo and pee-pee, cleaning your dog pen cannot go that way. As an owner who always wants to keep the health of his adorable four legged pal you need to be very efficient on cleaning the place where he always stay. Dog pens are prone to germs and bacteria, so it has to be cleaned regularly. Cleaning your dog pen may avoid you from bringing your pet on vet clinic because he is having a clean and healthy life. There are things that you will be needing on cleaning the dog pen, you cannot clean it with just your own bare hands alone.

Here is what you need: face mask, rubber gloves, disinfectant, poop scooper, sprayer, plastic/trash bags, sponge or sponge mop, bucket, broom and garden hose. When you already have all of these things prepared, go get your dog out of the pen and start cleaning it. But wait, do have any idea how to clean the dog pen properly? Have you tried cleaning it before? If it is your first time, I will give some easy good steps on how to clean it.

Read up the following instructions, it may help you if not a lot, maybe even for just little.

  1. Get your dog out of the pen. Place your dog on a separate place far from where you have decided to clean the dog pen. You may also ask some favor from a friend or anyone from your neighborhood if you can leave your pet for a little time while you are cleaning.

  1. Wear the face mask then put on your rubber gloves. These things will protect you from direct contact from dirt and from inhaling chemicals that is not good for your health, and also from contamination.

  1. Take of the bedding and your dog’s toys, food, water bowl and anything inside the dog pen.

  1. Expel those dirt and trash inside the pen by using a broom, or you can just pick it up.

  1. In a bucket full of water put on the disinfectant (you may read also the instructions on the label if you want). You have options on which one you want to use actually, there are disinfectants available in liquid form, powder and tablet. You may ask some advice from your vet or from the store assistant where you are buying (Pet stores also sell disinfectants) on which one you can use for the dog pen. Using disinfectants are more preferable than bleach as they are safer.

  1. When the disinfectant is already diluted start applying it on the pen. Use the sponge mop or sponge for cleaning the fencing and the floor area. Use the sprayer if needed.

  1. If you think it is clean enough you may leave it with the sunlight and let it dry. It is important to dry the dog pen totally before putting on your dog and its supplies inside, because it easily attracts dirt when it is wet.

  1. Take the trash bags where it belongs.

There you go, you just learned how to clean the dog pen properly. Always remember that, just like human beings dogs also needs to have a clean and healthier place to live. Dog pens are not that hard to clean, if you start to smell something weird and it is not you maybe it is the dog pen.
